Yes, I’ve heard

Posted in Game news at 17:06 by Jonas

Likely new Deus Ex game beginning development within the year. I’ve heard, thanks, no need to bring it to my attention. The DX community is fan-frickin’-atical, we know these things before IGN and GameSpot get around to writing about it.

My reaction? Eidos Montreal is a brand new studio, so I have no idea what sort of games they’ll want to make. But it can go two ways:

1) “Invisible War was a step in the right direction, but it wasn’t an all out commercial success, and I think if we streamline some more, we can do well!” (translation: “Let’s clusterfuck the fanbase, guys!”)

2) “Okay Crystal Dynamics did a pretty good job turning the rather dead Tomb Raider franchise around by going back to what made the first game so awesome, while still improving and modernizing the concept here and there. It was a success, and the fans loved it. Let’s ignore IW and see what we can do with the original DX formula.” (translation: “YAY!”)

Still, DX3 has not officially been announced just yet. Yes ofcourse there was that French speaking guy on that show, but it’s the only source there is. Reliable? He’s French and works for Eidos.

I read another theory by some guy: http://clicknothing.typepad.com/click_nothing/2007/05/deus_triple_ex.html who says it might be a publicity stunt to attract more developers to the montreal studio (and what better way to attract game developers by leaking that they may work on a sequel to one of the greatest games ever made).

I don’t know what to believe, I just hope there will be some real Eidos comment soon. At least this will probably raise interest of the DX gamers of old and hence result in more downloads for HDTP and TNM (quick, release it while DX is in the news! :P).

    I hope it’ll be more like 2.

Great, I make a post to tell people I’m aware of this news only to get a comment telling me about some other aspect of the news that I am also aware of ;)

But yeah although it’s not official, I really don’t think it’s the sort of thing you just fling out there, or you may get your arse severely kicked by the fans and your superiors alike. If it’s just a publicity stunt, I’m gonna put Agent 47 on him.

Another theory I’ve heard is that he could be going public about it in an attempt to put pressure on the Eidos management so they’ll let him develop DX3. I only think that sounds likely if the guy believes they’re already considering it, though, otherwise I doubt they’ll make a decision like that just because of his big mouth.

I still think it’s real though. The question is how much they’re going to involve the community. Something like the degree to which Obsidian was in touch with the NWN community about NWN2 would be nice, but it’s probably hoping for too much.

lol, I wasn’t sure if you read that already ;)

Assuming it’s really going to happen, Eidos does not really have the reputation of involving (or actually caring about) the community. So for me it would be amazing if they would actually try to involve the community (perhaps contacting key members of some DX related forums like PDX, DXE or TTLG). I’d sure like to see it happen though, as I’ve posted elsewhere, I’m going to buy it regardless (depending on the reviews it may or may not be on the day of release).

Yeah I guess publishers in general don’t fancy having to deal with communities, which are generally composed mainly of very loud people with the patience and stubbornness of an infant. Atari probably only agreed to let Bioware run their NWN community circus because Bioware is significant and mostly handled it themselves anyway. And then when NWN2 came around, they were forced to let Obsidian adopt the same attitude lest their fans skin them alive.

I can’t help but wonder how long it might take to develop DX3. Say it takes… 3 years. Sounds realistic, right? Two years from now I’ll have a bachelor degree with a major in Film and Media Studies and a minor in Computer Science. And I’ll have published a huge mod for Deus Ex… think I could get an internship? :P

Maybe if you moved in with Trestkon, then take daily walks through Montreal until you ‘accidentally’ bump into the head honcho of the DX3 studio. He starts talking about needing some experienced DX modders for his new team, you bring up your mod legacy (TNM will at that time be almost ready and set for a release in that very year). The head honcho is obviously very impressed with your determination and enlists you as head of storylines for his team.

Taking all variables into account, I think the chances of something like this happening are like … 98%? :P
