Deus Ex and the pwnage thereof

Posted in Games, The Nameless Mod at 19:47 by Jonas

I played Deus Ex for the first time in 2001. Since then I’ve played it twice more. I also explored most of the levels in the editor to pick apart how they were done and to get inspiration for modding it.

But I keep finding new stuff. Today I found this:

It just flies across the map when you leave the metro station where you enter the area. In the map, there are two of them. They follow the same path across the area, but I don’t know when the other one is triggered. Why was this done? Level designer got bored? I believe it was done to add to the credibility of the level: UNATCO are fighting terrorists in the streets of New York, of course they’d send a chopper or two to get a tactical overview. Plus, it looks cool. If you notice it.

Looking upwards in Deus Ex? What an amazing idea, I never thought of that.
I feel like I’m from Krikkit now :o

I guess you have to be an extreme Deus Ex fan to find that kind of thing incredible :-o

It does have a purpose for those choppers to be there - to add to the atmosphere of the scene. If you didn´t notice the choppers your first way through the game - well then - it doesnt really matter, but if you HAD noticed them the first time through it would just have added to the tone of things…..BUT…. i wouldnt exactly proclaim this as brilliance. Its choppers - flying around - adding to the mood. Nothing else.

If you´d actually have the choice of interacting with them - then it could have been brilliant. Now they are just great from an atmosphere creation point of view….but not brilliant.

    My two cents,

Rasmus: It’s brilliant because there are so many details like these that you can keep finding new things after 7 years and many playthroughs. But I know you’re just saying this to get me down, you hater!

    Smike: STFU, foo’!
