Last minute rescue

Posted in Games, Personal at 19:56

Whew! 21 pages done and still a page or two of conclusion left to write. And it’s not even bad, what I’ve done - I think I may even make the curriculum minimum page count. Looks like I won’t be failing this paper after all!

How to celebrate…? I know! MASS EFFECT!

Speaking of which… what the hell, GameTrailers? “Best RPG of the Year” and you completely ignore both NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer and The Witcher in favour of some obscure Japanese hack’n’slash-’em-ups and Super Paper Mario!? SUPER PAPER MARIO!? Is that your idea of an RPG!? No wonder you chose Mass Effect, those other games aren’t even anything like proper competition! Jeez.

Cursed luck!

Posted in Games, Personal at 15:32

After being held in customs for nearly a month, Mass Effect finally arrives at my door with a whopping big customs fee of almost as much money as I paid for the game in the first place. I ended up saving a bit under 50 kr. ($10 USD / £5 GBP), or about 10% of the price I’d have paid if I’d bought it in Denmark, which in my opinion did not justify getting the game almost a month and a half after it was released. To really rub salt in the gaping, gushing wound left by this complete fiasco, I can’t play the game before my paper is done some time (probably very, very late) on January 1, lest I’ll miss my deadline and 15 of the 120 ECTS necessary to take my Bachelor exam), so for the next 4 or 5 days it will just sit there on my shelf and serve as another monumental temptation I’ll have to overcome. Needless to say I am done importing games from outside of the European Union.

Christmas and a tiny blog upgrade

Posted in Personal at 03:08

Christmas is upon us and my gift to you (my 7 regular readers) is a slight update of my sidebar. After an hour and a half of messing about with tiny details in CSS (How do I hate thee, Internet Explorer 6? Let me count the ways…), I have finally managed to make my two link images to ROOC and TNM look the way they were meant to appear from the beginning.

This change was brought on by a sudden desire to feature my Xbox 360 Live Gamercard on my blog after I tore through a bunch of bonus songs in Guitar Hero 3 on Expert. I seem to actually be really good at GH3, which is a welcome change from being mediocre or even downright bad at games in general (hopefully I’ll make a better game designer than I make a gamer). Just today, I scored 100% on Closer by Lacuna Coil on Expert in my very first attempt - I think that’s worthy of my pride.

Change

Posted in Personal at 16:45

Had a job interview today, if I can call it that. I was semi-headhunted (well not really but it makes me sound cool) for the position because the position I actually applied for was taken by the time I got off my arse to send my application. They must’ve liked my application, because instead they offered me the job of editing Forflyt.dk and EtSundtArbejdsLiv.dk.

They’re both project websites about work environments. The subject itself isn’t hugely interesting, but I’ll be happy to get away from tech support - it was getting pretty old. I stop at KumAdm on January the 25th, then I have a week off until I start at Arbejdsmiljøsekretariatet (good luck pronouncing that, non-Danes).

Bulletted bits of random info:

  • Mass Effect is still stuck in customs (what the crap, guys?)
  • Guitar Hero 3 is arriving including guitar tomorrow according to plan.
  • I’m supposed to be writing an exam paper for Fact Theory and Analysis, but for some reason I can’t get started.
  • My mind is completely blank and it’s kinda frustrating.
  • I’m on Facebook now, and apparently I have a lot of friends :o
  • I added Daniel’s blog to my blogroll. It’s not updated very frequently but he is a friend, so he deserves a place there.
  • I would add Casper’s blog too but it’s not gonna happen until he posts something on it. Come on man, how hard can it be?

An open letter

Posted in Games, Personal at 12:04

Dear Danish customs,
I can’t help but notice you’ve been holding my copy of Mass Effect since December 3. Quite probably because it was shipped from Singapore via England or something suspicious like that. I’d like you to know that I’m quite okay with you adding 25% to the price, because that’s the way our society works, and I’m happy to pay my due to the state in return for all sorts of awesome things like free health care, free education, pension, roads without holes, etc. Besides, even after I’ve paid taxes off of Mass Effect, it’s still significantly cheaper than if I’d bought it from my favourite Danish mail order store, Coolshop.dk (in fact it’s about a 150 kr. cheaper), so it’s fine, I’m cool with it.

But just get it over with. How can it possibly take more than a week (NINE DAYS and counting, in fact) to charge me 62 kr. and get on with it? Just print out a nice letter saying you’ve taxed me the proper amount and release the goddamn package. This is just ridiculous! I’ve been anticipating this game for well over a year and now I have to wait for your painfully slow bureaucracy to get off its ass as well!? SEND ME MY GAME.

Thank you,
Jonas

No news from the Western front

Posted in Games at 14:57

I finished Assassin’s Creed (AC) this weekend, and was tremendously pleased. I’ve heard from many people that it gets repetitive after a bit, but I think my fondness of the combat system and general exploration insulated me from that. It could be because I’m just more tolerant of repetition than the next guy, but I gave up on World of Warcraft relatively quickly because of the mindnumbing nature of the grinding, so I really think it’s just because I enjoyed the combat.

In one particularly cinematic fight, I attacked 5 guards who were harrassing a poor woman. Anybody who’s played AC will recognize that situation because there’s something like 10 of them in each city district in the game. I walked up to one of the guards keeping passers-by away and stabbed him covertly. Before his friend had turned to see what was going on, I jumped on him and stabbed him messily in the throat. The three harrassing guards immediately let go of the woman and attacked me, but I kept my guard up, waiting for the right moment. As the first of them struck, I activated a defensive counter that let me stab him in the foot and then slice upwards to put him out of the fight. Immediately I spun around and attacked the second guard, hitting attack again with perfect timing to activate a counter kill by which I kicked him in the guts, bent him over, and stabbed him in the neck. And just as he went down, I spun around again and threw a knife at the last guard, killing him as well.
