I stayed home from today’s lecture so I could catch up on the Film History reading. It’s a subject that wobbles precariously between entertaining, fascinating, and boring. But it did get me thinking about the internationality (is that word?) of the games industry - funny how most things make me think about games these days.

Wow. I just saw Donnie Darko
. What an amazing movie. Even my dad liked it, although I’m willing to bet he didn’t get at least half the plot. I say this with some certainty because I’m not sure I got half the plot.
I’m usually not very big on film analysis, mostly I’m studying Film and Media for the Media part. Specifically, Computer Media (to which around 3% of our curriculum is dedicated - not bitter!), but this is one of those movies that could motivate me to pay more attention during our Fiction Theory and Analysis classes. It is also the kind of film that absolutely makes me realize how much the world needs film scholars, because otherwise, how the Hell will we ever come to understand what happened in this movie?
Fantastic film. Gotta buy it now.

Wow okay. I saw Pan’s Labyrinth at a special screening yesterday; what a movie. It’s amazing that it actually won all those Oscars, because it seems so unamerican. It definitely feels like a sort of movie which would never have been posible to do in the US, but more power to the Mexicans for that, I guess.
Pan’s Labyrinth is poetic, cruel, beautiful, terrible, amazing, and grim. It’s a war movie and a fairy tale. And it’s definitely not for children. It’s the most equilibristic allegory I have ever seen. You should go see it, if you can.

January was the Month of Exams for the first semester, and as such, I turned in two papers. One was an insignificant Culture and Communication Theory paper of 7 pages that would either be passed or failed, the other was an important 15-page Media History paper which was to be graded on the 13-scale (apparently we switch to the new 12-scale this summer) and will actually show up on my final graduation papers.
I spent one evening writing the C&CT paper, whereas I took a whole week off from work to study intensively and write the Media History paper. Obviously the important one got an only slightly above-average grade (9, if you must know), whereas my C&CT paper generated a surprisingly excited reply from my teacher. Typical, eh?
I suspect it was just that he hadn’t read much about media convergence (the subject of my paper) before, but it can’t be half-bad if it managed to get him interested in the subject. Thus, I’ve put it on the FTP for you to read. But I’ll warn you in advance: It was written in Danish and I’m not sufficiently proud of it to translate it, so if you can’t read Danish, don’t bother. Otherwise, here’s a quick 7-page overview of some things that have been written about the phenomenon of media convergence

I’m just back from watching Underworld 2, and now I will provide a very brief summary of my opinion of the movie. I hope you’ll forgive me when I descend into pathetic fanboyism for a moment. Here’s my rating of Underworld 2:
This paw is for having Kate Beckinsale in the lead role.
This one is for giving her vampire fangs and a very tight leather suit.
This is for including a scene without the suit.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Watching an episode of 24 with my mum is like playing a game of “Spot the Propaganda”. It goes a bit like this:
Women are weak! 10 points.
Those that aren’t are manipulative or plain murdering evil! 20 points.
Torture is okay if you get results with it! 10 points.
And mental torture is okay no matter what: 20 points.
Political activists are whiny ingrateful traitors! 10 points.
ALL MUSLIMS ARE TERRORISTS! 10 points.
Except if they’ve lived in the ‘States long enough to learn good American values: 20 points.
Breaking the law is quite fine if you’re right! 10 points.
Even if you point guns at innocent bystanders and threaten to kill them, quite likely mentally scarring them for life: 20 points.
130 points! Not bad… and that’s just in the first 5 episodes. Let’s see how many we can collect before the show ends.

I just thought back on all the movies I’ve seen during this past few weeks, and I thought it might be nice to post my thoughts on some of them to keep them fresh in my mind. And to force my opinion on you, of course, that’s what blogs are for! Of course, I don’t really want to write detailed and intelligent comments on 5 different movies. Well intelligent perhaps, but not the verbose kind of intelligent. So what better way to comment on them all than in the form of short and useless reviews?

I went and got myself an inflammation in my left eye. It doesn’t actually hurt, but annoying side-effects include having quite a hard time getting out of bed this morning because I almost couldn’t open my left eye, seriously hindering my process of waking up (sad but true), and looking pretty much like this: o_-

As the title implies, growing up sucks. I think I’ve been growing up for quite a while now, but I’m probably not entirely done. For me, growing up is the process of eliminating your dreams one by one until, if you’re lucky, one remains… and if you’re not, none do. First I had to narrow it down to the realistic dreams. That meant cutting off superhero (Jonas-man, anyone? Yes, he existed in my mind, I even drew comics about him >_<), action-archeologist a'la Indiana Jones, top-secret spy / elite commando soldier, space explorer, and all that crap. It was great while it lasted.
